About Us

Welcome to Mana Fireknives

The fire knife is a powerful symbol of Samoan culture, used in ceremonial dances and storytelling. Its roots trace back to the ancient warrior practice of ailao, where Samoan warriors demonstrated strength, agility, and precision using the nifo ‘oti—a lightweight, sword-like weapon often adorned with boar tusks or shark teeth.

In 1946, Uluao “Freddie” Letuli transformed this tradition by introducing fire, inspired by performers he observed in San Francisco. This innovation gave rise to the modern Siva Afi (Samoan Fire Knife Dance), now a centerpiece of Polynesian shows, luaus, and international competitions such as the World Fire Knife Championships at the Polynesian Cultural Center.
